Wedding Jewellery

For thousands of years people have been fashioning and wearing jewellery not only as a symbol of status and importance but for many other reasons too. Some early wedding jewellery dating back to beyond the ancient Egyptians was made of reeds, twine and flowers. It wasn't until the ancient Romans that iron was used to make the earliest wedding rings which were then to be made from precious metals some centuries later.

Wedding jewellery goes beyond the donning of wedding rings. For the bride in particular, it is traditionally expected that she will wear some form of jewellery be it a tiara, a necklace, earings or a bracelet. Also the bridesmaids quite often wear similar or identical jewellery to compliment the bride.

Modern wedding jewellery can be made from a variety of materials. Wedding rings for example are available in silver, titanium and stainless steel as well as traditional

yellow and white gold.

As such, necklaces, bracelets, tiaras & earings are also available in non precious materials. These items are more commonly refered to as costume jewellery which although are not expensive to buy, they do look as beautiful as many far more costly items of jewellery.

Did you know?

Traditionally the wedding ring is worn on the third finger on the left hand because it was believed that a vein runs directly from that finger to the heart named 'Vena Amoris' meaning the vein of love.
